Departments

General Internal Medicine

For outpatients, the Department of General Medicine serves as 1) a contact point for patients whose symptoms do not warrant examination by a specialist (such as fever, fatigue, edema, or dizziness), and 2) a place for initial diagnosis and treatment of lifestyle-related illnesses (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia) and other such chronic ailments.

Endocrinology and Metabolism

This department conducts general and emergency diagnosis and treatment for endocrinological disorders involving such areas as the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, adrenal glands, thyroid gland, and parathyroid glands as well as metabolic disorders that include diabetes and hyperlipidemia. For thyroid disorders, which account for the majority of endocrinological diseases, the department also performs thyroid echography and fine-needle aspiration (by appointment), and makes surgical referrals in the case of tumorous disorders that require surgery.

Cardiology

This department provides care for all types of cardiological disorders. Disorders treated: arteriosclerotic diseases (including ischemic heart disease and arteriosclerosis obliterans), hypertension, heart failure, and arrhythmia, and the like

Nephrology

This department specializes in kidney disorders. Major ailments treated: chronic kidney disease, acute nephropathy, primary glomerular disorders, (including nephrotic syndrome), and abnormalities found by urinalysis

Respirology

All kinds of disorders of the respiratory system, diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), CT diagnosis of abnormal shadows in thoracic X-rays, diagnosis of chronic cough, sleep apnea, and nontuberculous mycobacterial infection

Gastroenterology

The Department of Gastroenterology deals with diseases of the stomach and intestines, liver, bile duct (including the gall bladder), and pancreas. Major disorders treated: digestive-tract disorders (disorders of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon), liver disease, bile-duct disorders, and pancreatic disease

Neurology

This department treats all kinds of neurological disorders. It conducts diagnosis and treatment for such disorders as cerebrovascular disease, functional disorders (including epilepsy and headaches), dementia, and demyelinating disease, but not for psychiatric disorders. The department places particular focus on diagnosis and treatment during the acute stages of cerebral infarction. It also conducts MRI and CT imaging as needed.

Hematology

This department specializes in hematopoietic disorders and hematologic malignancies.
1) Diagnosis and treatment of hematopoietic disorders: The department diagnoses and treats anemia and all other types of abnormalities seen in blood counts.
2) Diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies: diagnosis and treatment of such hematologic malignancies as leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, lymphatic tumors, and myelomas
3) Other disorders: The department also provides diagnosis and treatment for plasma protein abnormalities and blood coagulation disorders.

Rheumatology

This department diagnoses and treats such disorders as rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disease, and fever of unknown origin. The medical care provided extends from basic treatment using glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants to such leading-edge therapies as biologic agents and small molecular target drugs.

Psychiatry

This department diagnoses and treats all types of psychiatric disorders, including school refusal, hikikomori, depression, sleep disorders, dissociative disorders, schizophrenia, and dementia. Note, however, that this department has no hospitalization ward, and provides diagnosis and treatment only on an outpatient basis. Persons who require hospitalized care, such as those in an agitated states or in danger of suicide, cannot be seen.

Pediatrics

Secondary diagnosis and treatment of all types of pediatric disorders, respiratory disorders, neurological disorders, rehabilitation of disabilities, food allergies, renal disorders, endocrinological and metabolic disorders, sleep disorders, and the like.

Gastroenterological Surgery

Diagnosis and surgical operations for diseases of the digestive tract (including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon), diagnosis and surgical operations for liver, bile-duct, and pancreatic disorders, and emergency response and emergency surgery for acute abdominal ailment.

Surgery

General surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and breast surgery Major disorders treated: acute abdominal disorders requiring immediate surgery, including gastrointestinal malignancies (including esophogeal cancers, stomach cancers, colon cancers, and biliopancreatic malignancies), benign gastrointestinal disorders, gallstones and intestinal blockages), breast cancers and other mammary-gland disorders, hernias, and internal hemorrhoids

Neurosurgery

Treatment during the early stages of stroke and emergency treatment for head injuries are possible. This department performs emergency surgery for acute epidural and subdural hematomas.

Orthopedic Surgery

We have expertise in areas of fracture and trauma, sports injuries, joint replacement, osteotomy, and knee, shoulder, elbow, and hand surgery.

Dermatology

Eczema, dermatitis (including atopic, seborrheic, and contact dermatitis), burns (minor), frostbite, corns, ingrown nails, hives, prurigo, dermal pruritus, pemphigoid, psoriasis, alopecia areata, bacterial skin disorders (including folliculitis and acne), dermatomycosis (ringworm, candidiasis, and tinea versicolor), and viral disorders (herpes simplex, shingles, and molluscum contagiosum)

Anesthesiology

All types of clinical anesthesia (including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management) This department aims to perform safe and secure anesthesia, preventing occurrence of postoperative complications and enabling speedy recovery. The department strives to provide comprehensible explanations regarding anesthesia to preoperative patients and their families and allay concerns about surgery. We also aim to pain-free anesthesia postoperatively, and conduct postoperative pain management by means of infusion devices for epidural, intravenous, and subcutaneous injections. At the Center, all surgical procedures except those using local infiltration anesthesia are performed with safety control by an anesthesiologist.

Urology

Urology puts emphasis on the urinary tracts of males and females as well as the reproductive system of males. Urologists are professionals in the medical field of urology and their primary focus is to diagnose, treat, and control urological disorders. The department specializes in the treatment of prostate cancer and other malignant tumors (neoplasms of kidney, renal pelvis, ureter, bladder, and testis). Treatment for patients with adrenal tumors, urinary tract infections, benign prostate enlargement, interstitial cystitis, urinary incontinence, overactive bladders, and urolithiasis is also provided. As a specialized surgical treatments, laparoscopic surgery (partial nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, pyeloplasty, and nephroureterectomy), brachytherapy, transurethral lithotomy (f-TUL, r-TUL), and percutaneous nephrolithotripsy are performed.

Gynecology

With a focus on advanced surgery and chemotherapy (treatment using anticancer agents) for gynecological tumors, this department provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment that extends from early-stage lesion to progressive and recurring cancers.

Ophthalmology

Major disorders diagnosed and treated: cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, ptosis, entropion, pterygium, macular degeneration, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, and posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery

Otorhinolaryngology

This department diagnoses and treats all types of ear, nose, and throat disorders. Specifically, this includes such surgical procedures of the throat as endoscopic paranasal sinus surgery, tonsillectomies, adenoidectomies, as well as laryngeal microsurgery, parotid tumor surgery, and tympanoplasties. Nasal laser therapy has also been possible since fiscal 2014.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

As the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of a major hospital, we provide treatment that emphasizes coordination with local medical care.
Disorders in the domain of oral and maxillofacial surgery, conservation, dental prosthetics, and oral surgical disorders in persons with diseases or disabilities (pediatric and adult), and other intractable disorders

Rehabilitation Medicine

This department meets facility standards for cerebrovascular and locomotor rehabilitation. This department conducts rehabilitation in the early stages of stroke and executive dysfunction, rehabilitation for skeletal and joint disorders, internal impairments (such as diabetes), prevention of disuse during hospitalization, including postoperatively, cancer and swallowing rehabilitation, phenol and botulinum-toxin therapy for spasticity, nerve-conduction studies, and needle electromyography. The department also prepares medical certificates for persons with physical disabilities and for pensions.

Radiology

Imaging-based diagnosis centering on CT and MRI scanning and mammography, trunk angiography, interventional radiology, nuclear-medicine diagnosis, and radiotherapy

Laboratory

The Laboratory Department comprises a Clinical Laboratory Section for physiological, blood-transfusion, bacteriological, and pathological testing, and a Clinical Engineering Section for cardiotherapy, respiratory therapy, metabolic therapy, and management of medical equipment. Both sections play important roles in supporting diagnosis and treatment at the hospital. Diagnostic Pathology conducts surgical pathology, cytopathology, rapid intraoperative diagnosis, and pathological dissection. The disorders dealt with include tumors (including those in the digestive track, breast, urinary tract, reproductive organs, head and neck, and hematopoietic system), adenoids and other benign disorders in the domain of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, in the inflammatory disorders of many different organs, and this department accommodates the other diagnostic and treatment departments established in the Tama-Hokubu Medical Center in diverse ways.
